Success GoldDo you really know what you are capable of? Can you explain what skills you have to offer your current or potential employer?  Many people don’t know what transferable skills are and therefore have a hard time explaining what they can actually do.  Can someone go from being a stay-at-home-mom with no experience to being in a professional setting?  Absolutely – through transferable skills!
Here is a quick list of some skills that caregivers such as moms can bring:
  • Communication
  • Decision making
  • Goal Setting
  • Dependability
  • Time Management
  • Listening
  • Resourcefulness
  • Organizational Skills
  • Many more!
Check out this great list of transferable skills to give you a better idea.  Which ones do you have?  Now what do you do with this knowledge?
Take these steps:
  1. Identify what skills you already have – conduct a personal performance review
  2. Create a top five list -last month’s newsletter had a great resource with Strengthsfinder 2.0
  3. Practice promoting yourself – how do you convey your unique skills to others?
  4. Identify skills gaps – do you require additional training?  Do you know what is happening in the labour market?
  5. Become the best YOU – keep working on completing the package
A great article by Dan Schawbel, author of Me 2.0, describes how to become a generalist AND a specialist.  It explains that there is a benefit to having many general skills that employers will need, but if you can combine that with your own special talents, you will enjoy much more success.
So the two questions to ask yourself are:
  • Do you have enough general skills to be employable?
  • What makes you special and unique?
