howard stern, don't listen to customer feedback, joe girardNow this is a story all about how, my day got flipped, turned upside down. I’d like to take a minute, so just sit right there, and I’ll tell you how Howard Stern told a fan the he doesn’t care.

Thanks to Ameer Rosic, I heard an awesome audio clip of how Howard Stern dealt with a listener who called in to give feedback about his show.

How do you feel when people try and tell you their ideas on how you can improve? Howard Stern flips the script.

I don’t want to spoil it, so click the audio link below to have a listen.

Why is this so awesome?

I love the way Stern dealt with this fan – especially since they were not even calling with a negative attitude. They were one of those people who feel like they are helping and want to give you a “small piece of advice.”

How many people do that to you in your every day life?

I think it’s awesome that he stayed true to his brand. He built his empire by by sticking to his guns and standing for something he believed in. Years ago, I remember seeing the movie about his story and the way he got his start.

If he took a listener’s advice, he most likely would alienate his core listeners  – those that stood by him for being a maverick. It doesn’t work for every brand, but he stuck to his brand and it works for him.

One warning to other companies. Don’t try and copy this tactic unless it is your true, authentic self.

Can YOU stay true to yourself?

It’s easy to stay excited when people tell you everything is fine. But what will you do, when others want to give you some unsolicited advice? Like perhaps you should not start that business, or you should try this new marketing campaign, or maybe you should be careful not to offend anyone.

Remember that you can’t please everyone.

If you try and be all things to all people, you end up being nothing to everyone. Next time someone tries to give you that helpful advice, take it with a grain of salt, or if you are bold enough, follow in Howards steps and just say, “No thanks.”
